Over the past semester, I have participated in a research/ data analysis project through my Foundations of Business Intelligence Class. After reviewing many datasets and topics to pursue, my team and I decided to analyze Healthcare Coverage datasets from the US Census Bureau database. While this topic is extremely relevant to our current circumstances, we saw the importance of understanding Healthcare statistics before the COVID- 19 pandemic. Healthcare Coverage affects us in our daily life, whether it’s for an annual medical checkup, a trip to the dentist, a factor when negotiating for a job, or a consideration when deciding on which presidential candidate gets your vote.

Research: To successfully analyze this data, we utilized tableau to create a comprehensive dashboard. While the data was overwhelming, with a lot of demographics, types of insurance and other variables, it was important that we cleansed the data and drilled it down to what is relevant in order to optimize the datasets. Ultimately, we narrowed it down to the four categories: age, race, education, and income. Overall, we have learned that Socioeconomic & demographic characteristics all have significant independent effects on the likelihood that one person will be uninsured compared to another. With the current and unpredictable climate, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the Healthcare system to make wise and efficient decisions moving forward. But overall it is interesting to observe the impact of the current situation on the healthcare system and see the changes that it will bring in the foreseeable future.

Experience: Working on this project has taught me a lot about the importance of team collaboration. While there were many inferences that could be drawn from the data and multiple user stories that could be focused on, it was important that as a group we decided where to prioritize our skills and time. Along with team collaboration, this class was an opportunity to hone our analytical, technical and overall presentation skills. These skills are instrumental in our career and can make us better IT professionals for being able to deliver efficient and relevant business solutions. It is exactly theses skills and experience that put us in an advantageous position in the job market as those who can bridge the gap between technology and business. Business Intelligence places a crucial role in the fast pacing corporate industry for executives and managers to make informed decisions. We were given the opportunity to practice these skills by presenting our research to a panel of judges from a diverse group of well-established companies and industries. While this class is coming to end, I will be carrying the skills that I have learned into my professional career. This class has sparked my interest in data visualization and has encouraged me to pursue a certification in tableau. I will continue to challenge myself and to continuously develop my skills in analytical thinking and problem- solving. I would like to thank Professor Shekhar for supporting us throughout the semester and for making this class resourceful despite the current circumstances.
